AWO International was founded in 1998 as a professional association for development cooperation and humanitarian action within the framework of the German welfare organization “Arbeiterwohlfahrt” (AWO, literally: Workers’ Welfare).  In cooperation with local partner orga ... nizations, AWO International is committed to support marginalized and disadvantaged groups of society to sustainably improve their living conditions. In crisis situations, AWO International, also in cooperation with local non-governmental organizations, quickly provides humanitarian aid to the affected population and supports the rehabilitation and reconstruction process. Also in Germany, AWO International aims at promoting the topics of solidarity, justice, the effects of globalization and fair trade among the population. In the scope of the project “Global Learning”, we offer educational events in order to raise public awareness about global interrelations and dependencies, as well as inform about challenges and chances of globalization. Since 2007, AWO International has been promoting the idea of fair trade and offers own fairly traded and ecologically produced products.

Job Description:

Job Location: Country Office Kathmandu, Nepal with frequent field trips
Portfolio  Development Work & Humanitarian and Recovery Aid 
Reporting to: Head Representative 

Functional Relationships 

The Head of Finance and Administration (HoFA) reports to the Head Representative (HR). The position serves on the Senior Management Team of the Country Office. Under the supervision of the HR, the HoFA is responsible for all financial and administrative processes and will implement financial management standards in the programmes and projects efficiently and promptly, thereby making a significant contribution towards the success of the programme work. In general, you will ensure that the Country Programme including the various projects are financially managed in accordance to relevant donor and AWOs internal rules and regulations. 

Overall Responsibilities 

  • Maintain the programme wide financial management system of Awo International 
  • Ensure sound budget planning when project proposals are being drafted 
  • Control and supervise liquidity planning of the projects and internal fund requests 
  • Monitor and ensure the proper planning of financial and other resources 
  • Recruiting, account assignment and induction of new staff (in the field of financial / project administration) 
  • Supervising the government liaison officer and the finance/admin staff 
  • Provide input to proposals and / or develop budgets for proposals in close coordination with the programme department and the HR? 
  • Monitor and ensure the accurate and prompt drawing up of internal and external financial reports in accordance with the appropriate guidelines 
  • Conduct training sessions in the field offices to ensure financial and administrative compliance standards are met and provide guidance for AWOs finance/admin staff and project partners in line with AWOs rules and regulations 
  • Check partner agreements taking into account the capacity of the partners and the donor regulations 
  • Ensure reporting deadlines are met 
  • Coordinate closely with the programme department in all relevant financial / programmatic areas 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Several years of professional experience in the administration of co-financed projects for international (aid) organizations 
  • Excellent coordination and organizational skills, including ability to work under pressure 
  • A high level of mental and physical resilience and readiness to travel to areas with volatile local conditions 
  • An excellent knowledge of English and Nepali (spoken and written), German is an asset

Education + Experience:

  • A university or polytechnic degree in a relevant field e.g. finance, business administration and accounting 
  • A minimum of 5 years professional experience working on the same or equivalent position in INGOs
