Job Description:

Responsible to: Country Operations Manager

Location: Nepal Country Office, Lalitpur (with as needed national travel within Nepal)

Contract: One-year renewal contract

Overall Purpose of the Job:

Youth Development Officers (YDOs) have an important role in Raleigh International Nepal’s (RIN’s) youth strategy. YDOs are responsible for the marketing, recruitment, retention and exit pathways of RIN’s Nepali Volunteers (which are called Host Country Volunteers or HCVs). Volunteers are RIN’s core business and RIN mobilizes Nepali volunteers in both of its flagship programmes of International Citizenship Service (ICS) and Expedition. YDOs are responsible to represent and advertise Raleigh and its programmes, to seek out potential volunteer candidates, recruit and train them, and fulfill an important role in the management and deployment of Nepali volunteers. YDOs need to have experience in marketing, promotion and recruitment, ideally with a focus on youth. RIN is envisaging YDOs who have connections, networks and broad awareness of where potential volunteers could be sourced, are able to conduct promotional and information sessions for prospective volunteers, and can facilitate the recruitment of Nepali volunteers. YDOs also train and prepare Nepali volunteers to participate in RIN’s programmes and play a supporting role for Nepali volunteers both during and after the volunteer cycle completes. 

Key Responsibilities:

1. Recruitment

  • Develop a volunteer recruitment strategy alongside the Country Operations Manager to define target audiences for all volunteering roles, and recruitment methodology (online and offline) to ensure target volunteer numbers are met and recruitment activities are within budget
  • This includes building relationships with partner organisations, schools, universities and youth organisations across the country in order to encourage referrals onto Raleigh programmes
  • Develop and implement a recruitment work plan to attract a diverse range of volunteers for both generalist and specialist roles
  • Develop tools to monitor, report on and evaluate delivery of the recruitment strategy e.g. recruitment funnel and diversity data
  • Effectively record volunteer data using relevant Raleigh International databases
  • Build relationships with corporate, professional, and academic bodies, youth CSOs, and other stakeholders to ensure volunteer referrals
  • Handle incoming enquiries from young people and potential referral partners interested in Raleigh programmes
  • Regular engagement with potential volunteers by phone, email and social media to encourage applications
  • Use social media channels to effectively communicate with target audiences to network and promote relevant discussions
  • Develop marketing materials and copy that adhere to Raleigh’s objectives and brand guidelines
  • Deliver open events, external talks and fairs when required
  • Ensure the delivery of Raleigh International Nepal Host Country Volunteer Recruitment targets and KPIs.
  • Develop strategies and practices to ensure a 1:1 Host Country Volunteer with International Volunteer ratio every cycle at RIN.

2. Training and Support:

  • Support the implementation of the Youth in Civil Society (YiCS) strategy
  • Deliver volunteer assessment, training and support events
  • Design and deliver high quality pre-placement training events for all volunteering roles, that complement the overall learning journey, and support the learning curriculum delivered by the operations and programmes team and by working with both Raleigh International Nepal and Raleigh UK.
  • Develop and implement training and support processes for all volunteer roles, in accordance with organisational KPIs
  • Review and evaluate all volunteer training and support events, processes, and tools.
  • Share best practice, ideas, learning and successes within the team and organisation-wide to maximise the effectiveness of learning and support activities.
  • Support the delivery of in country induction (Nepali and International volunteers) alongside operations and programmes team when required
  • Support the delivery of   Final Review and Debrief sessions alongside operations and programmes team when required
  • Overseeing the implementation of Action at Home activities for national volunteers
  • Provide support to operations and programmes teams to ensure projects are implemented against agreed plans, standards and criteria.

3. Volunteer Support:

  • Work in a team, as directed by the Country Operations Manager, alongside Operations Co-ordinators, Deputy Operations Co-ordinators and other members of the operations team to ensure Host Country Volunteers are managed and deployed safely and effectively
  • Where necessary and directed, provide support to Operations Team in managing volunteer safety, conduct, behavior, and challenges
  • Where necessary, work with the Programmes Team in ensuring Host Country Volunteers are deployed effectively within the programme
  • Design, develop, implement and evaluate post programme and returned volunteer events and programmes
  • Work alongside the Programmes Team National Youth Programmes staff such as the Youth for Green Growth Coordinator and Youth Social Enterprise Accelerator Coordinator to provide opportunities for alumni volunteers to contribute to RIN youth programming
  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of RIN volunteer mobilization and support strategies
  • Other duties as required and directed to enhance Host Country Volunteer participation in the programme

4. Promotion:

  • Work in a team with the Communications Officer and others to design and develop content to promote Raleigh programmes and volunteer opportunities
  • Support the development of RIN media collateral and content to enhance recruitment and retention of Host Country Volunteers
  • Represent Raleigh, as required, at youth networks or other relevant events and symposia
  • Work collaboratively to enhance Nepali specific promotional content, collateral, and promotional opportunities

5. Other Responsibilities:

  • Where needed and as required and directed, travel to RIN programme sites and communities to support Host Country Volunteers
  • Where needed and as required and directed, support in the logistic deployment of RIN volunteer programmes
  • Perform administrative and data management tasks to ensure accurate record keeping.
  • Perform support, administrative or other tasks which are reasonably requested by the YDO Line Manager
  • Adhere to and comply with RIN policies and procedures including specifically Privacy and Confidentiality, Code of Conduct and Safety/Safeguarding

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Professional experience working with young people in Nepal. 
  • Experience in a youth focused role or organization or qualifications specific to working with young people
  • Experience in promotion, event design, and facilitation, recruitment and support. Experience with young people will be highly regarded. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Nepali and English. 
  • Experience with volunteers and volunteer mobilization. 
  • Experience in meeting targets and KPIs. Particular emphasis will be given to recruitment and promotion targets. 
  • Experience in meeting deadlines, effective use of resources and in multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills including working cross-culturally. 

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a development organization (NGO or INGO) will be highly regarded. 
  • Experience in working with stakeholders which surround young people including parents/caregivers, schools/colleges, youth groups/clubs, etc. 
  • Established networks or insights into youth networks where potential volunteers might be sourced. 
  • Experience with conflict resolution and supporting young people, including young people from vulnerable backgrounds.
  • Experience of database management and record keeping 
  • Experience of interpreting database information

Education + Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline such as marketing, education or social science/social work.

Benefits:

  • All travel, accommodation, and food whilst on Raleigh business will be paid for by Raleigh International Nepal
  • Normal working hours during the programme are 40 hours per week, 5 days a week, with a day off scheduled on Saturday and Sunday 
  • The leave entitlement is 30 working days including sick leave per year plus 13 public holidays pro-rated to the contract. Outside normal working hours may attract Time Off in Lieu as agreed with the line manager, and in accordance with the guidance set out in the staff handbook
  • The salary and benefits will be as per RIN rules. Tax will be deducted as per government law
