It seeks to build the capacity of and facilitate coordination among the GON, civil society, and private sector to combat human trafficking in Nepal.

Job Description:

POSITION TITLE:  Agriculture Market Management Expert/Consultant

LOCATION:  Kathmandu, Nepal

REPORTS TO:  Business and Market Systems Director 

BACKGROUND

The USAID/Nepal-funded KISAN II project is improving food security in twenty-fiveHill and Terai districts in Bagmati province, Province 5, Karnali province and Sudur Paschim province of the country . The purpose of the project is to increase resilience, inclusiveness, and sustainability of income growth in the Feed the Future Zone of Influence. KISAN II will help lead firms, input suppliers, and private actors to catalyze agricultural productivity, competitive market systems, access to finance, a stronger enabling environment, and business and literacy skills for households in two zones of influence.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The consultant will work directly with Safe Food Alliance Nepal (SFAN) to develop Safe Food Alliance Nepal (SFAN) MarketGuidelines.The market guidelines will focus on (i) transportation from farm to wholesale/ retail node; (ii)packaging possibilities and guideline at production node; (iii) holding and storage;and (iv) retail and marketing. These guidelines will be regularly updated and consultant are required to develop minimum guidelines/ a must do at different nodes explained above.

SFAN is a not for profit sharing private company working on facilitating Safe Food Market System Management along their supply chain (farm to market). In this regard, SFAN members havealready developed safe food farm practices at production Node,and is in the process of optimizing transportation, holding center, retail network and storage.

  • Desk research and review of existing agriculture market related guidelines.

  • Visit and interaction with supply chain actors that are member of Safe Food Alliance Nepal to assess existing post-production practices.

  • Orient the member of Safe Food Alliance Nepal representatives about the Safe Food Alliance Market Guidelines.

DELIVERABLES

  1. Develop Safe Food Alliance Nepal Market Guideline that is in line with Nepal GAP and/or global safe food practices. The market guidelines will include specific guidelines for transportation, packaging, holding and storage, and retail and marketing of agriculture commodities.
  2. Orient the member of Safe Food Alliance Nepal and government representatives about the Safe Food Alliance Nepal Market Guidelines.

LEVEL OF EFFORT

  • 10 days stretched over 2 months.As of USAID compliance, Consultant is expected/allowed to work 6 days a week. For official travel and stay (means of transportation, lodging, per diem) will be applicable/paid as per KISAN II norms in addition to daily rate.

REPORTING

The consultant will report to Business and Market System Director, KISAN II.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In depth knowledge and understanding of agriculture supply chainmanagement (cold chain, wholesale/holding center, retail outlets, agriculture marketing, etc.)from global, national and local perspective.
  • Adequate experience in developing agriculture market related post-production guidelines.
  • Good written English and report writing ability.

The assignment requires high engagement with market actors and getting in depth knowledge on post-production practices like cold chain management, wholesale/holding center management, retail outlets management, agriculture marketing, etc. Also, knowledge on Agri-Economics is must as while making market node guideline as Agriculture economics and understanding market dynamics and governance enables best positioning of market node guidelines. 

Education + Experience:

  • Master’s level degree in Agri-business Management or Agricultural Economics or relevant field.
